Society Visit to Clanfield Observatory and South Downs Planetarium

SOCIETY VISIT: Saturday 21st May – Rearranged from Saturday 14th May due to a double booking with Dr John mason.

A coach trip has been planned for the Society to visit the observatory of the Hampshire Astronomical Group (HAG) at Clanfield followed by a presentation by Dr John Mason OBE at the South Downs Planetarium, Chichester.

HAG is the largest society in the Southern Area Group. Formed in 1960, it now has over 200 members. Its observatory on the South Downs houses five telescopes, including a 24” reflector that was commissioned in October 2014. The guide will be the HAG Chairman – Graham Bryant.

The South Downs Planetarium was one of Sir Patrick Moore’s personal projects. His life-like wax figure that welcomes you came from Madame Tussauds. Relax in the aircraft style seats (they came from a 747) and Dr John Mason will show you the southern stars, invisible from northern latitudes, and show you the capabilities of this, the only planetarium in Sussex.

The cost will be about £20 and will include all coach travel, admission to the planetarium, presentation and complimentary tea/coffee at the planetarium. Meals are not included, but we will have a lunch stop in Chichester which has many cafés, pubs and restaurants. Tickets will be available soon: There is a maximum of 29 people, so early booking is advised.
