Title: The Monsters Fiery Breath (Supermassive Blackholes)
Lecturer: Prof. Peter Thomas
Precis: Until relatively recently black holes were mythical objects, fantasies of a theorist’s imagination. But now there is very strong evidence that they exist and that they have a large impact on their environments. The largest black holes can have a mass of a million to a billion Suns and there is one at the centre of every galaxy, including our own Milky Way.
This talk will present the evidence for the existence of black holes and discuss the role that they are thought to play in galaxy formation.
